Series Reviews

UPDATE: I am discontinuing this series list, having moved everything to a new page (via tab at top of blog), as of 9/13/10.

Here are the series to which I am committed, the ones that I'm either working my way through, the ones for which I'm waiting impatiently for for the next book to be published, and the ones that I have completed. This is as much for myself (so I can be reminded to check for forthcoming books in my favorite series) as for anyone else who might be interested. For now, I'll put ones that I've reviewed so far, and as time permits I will add others (since I've only been reviewing here since April of 2007. If you have any suggestions for must-read series that are not included here, by all means, bring 'em on!

  1. Wow! No wonder you need to track them! Though if I tallied my serieses up, I'd probably be almost here. Some really great ones here!! But where is Kresley Cole's Immortals after dark??? That's my fave by far.

  2. What a fun idea! I must admit that I'm hooked/addicted on several of the same series. Especially the In Death, Bartimeaus, Women of the Otherworld and Wicked Lovely books. I will also be checking out some of the new-to-me series you recommended! Which means I will never have any spare time again; it will all be spent reading. Thanks!

  3. The Mediator series by Meg Cabot and the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede are both good fun, and seem like they'd fit in well with the rest of your books.

  4. holy cow! That is a ton of series books. I dunno about that...I have a hard time with series because I get too attached to characters and have a hard time starting new ones.

  5. Well thanks Darla for just adding like a Gajillion books to my wishlist! :p

  6. Wow thats a lot of series! Most of mine have come to a end over the last few years, so I'm looking forward to reading new to me authors like Patricia Briggs.

My favourite on you list has to be Alison Croggon though. Get reading on the next one girl!

  8. I need to make a post of this too but I just know I'd forget most of them lol. I read a LOT of series and there are SO many that I'm behind on.

The Kelley Armstrong books are one, I've only read one of Holly Black's (always meant to read more), I have the second book in the Jenna Black series, all caught up on Briggs until Bone Crossed comes out, I'm SO far behind on all of MaryJanice Davidson's books, & need to read Plum Spooky and Swallowing Darkness. Just got caught up with Harrison, just picked up the first two Huffs, waiting on the second LaFevers, need to read the rest of L'Engle's books and Marr's second book. Haven't decided if I'll read all of the Robb's yet or not, need to read my copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and the Stroud books are on my list.

  9. Carolyn Jean - I know what you mean - I was shocked when I saw them all! I haven't even heard of Immortals after Dark! Yikes! Sounds like I'll be adding a new series. I will have to remedy that lack as quickly as possible. Thanks for the tip!

Fuzzycricket - Yeah, yeah, consider it payback! :-)

Fyrefly - I read the Enchanted Forest ones years ago and loved them. My girls and I also listened to the first one in audio, and it was wonderful. Thanks for bringing them back to my mind - we'll have listen to the rest. I haven't done the Mediator ones - I'll add them to my list. Thanks!

Serena - I had no idea I'd have so many! I know what you mean about getting attached. I guess that's why I enjoy revisiting the characters in subsequent books. My main problem is forgetting previous books in series and feeling lost when a new one finally comes out. Although I must say that since I've been writing this blog, the books stay so much fresher in my mind than they used to!

Chris - My pleasure! You've added scads to mine, so I'm pleased to do the same. :-)

Mariel - I can't wait to hear what you think about Patricia Briggs! I have the second Pellinor sitting on my pile right now. I'll start it next, I promise (but don't expect a review any time soon, because I'm still working on 2008 books, sigh.

Nymeth - I know, I know. I'm thinking my friends and family will gang up on me and do an intervention at any moment...
    :-p

Ladytink - I would love to see your series list if you ever get around to making one! Since we share so many in common, I'm sure I'd love whatever others you have on there. I'm waiting for my copy of Plum Spooky to come in at the library, and I'm looking forward to that! Too bad it didn't come in time for Halloween.

  10. I remember the Diane Duane books fondly, though it's been a while. Did you know there are two cat stories set in the same world (Book of Night With Moon and To Visit The Queen)? They were the ones I read first.

Of course there's the Laurell Hamilton books. For the most part they're always a good read.

I just got His Majesty's Dragon today. I've seen enough positive things about the series on Librarything that I got curious enough to get it despite my to read pile being taller than I am.

Have you read anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon? Her Dark Hunter books are another series that are always a good read.

You might also enjoy the Mercedes Lackey books. I know I find the Valdemar series and the 500 Kingdoms series to be what I call 'Old Friends'.

  11. WOW! That's impressive!
There are a few on there that I fancy. City of Bones and Wicked Lovely are already on my list; the Anita blake series I really want to read. Have you tried Libba Bray's series? I got it from the library and it's next on my list.
I am looking for a vampire book that my hubby might want to read (he asked for one), but not Dracula. Would the Anita Blake ones be good for a bloke in his
30s who is not a particularly keen reader?

  12. Wow. That looks like the series list for my whole middle school library. It's hard keeping on top of all the series, isn't it?

  13. That's quite a list. I'm pretty sure it's longer than mine. lol! And there are several of yours that could easily be added to mine. I've heard good things about the Tanya Huff series for instance. And my husband's been reading the Kim Harrison books and loving them. *sigh* So many books...

To your list I would definitely add The Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan and The Hollow Kingdom trilogy by Claire B. Dunkle. Both trilogies are wonderful.

  14. Elena - Thanks for your input! I have read those Diane Duane cat books and enjoyed them very much! I'd completely forgotten about those. I think I have the first Kenyon on my towering book pile - now I'm looking even more forward to reading it! I'll be interested to hear what you think of His Majesty's Dragon - I had no idea what to expect of that one, and I think that made it even more fun to read. I read the Valdemar books ages ago - several times - and really enjoyed them!

Library Mice - A vampire book for your husband, eh? The Anita Blakes start out as paranormal mysteries, but later on in the series they become more about Anita, her personal journey, and move away from mystery and into erotica. I think they have a larger readership among women than men, but that doesn't mean your husband wouldn't like them. I'd recommend Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series to try first. I read the first couple and have been meaning to reread them and move onto the rest of the series. Because apparently I need more series in my life! :-)

Ms. Yingling - I know, it's pretty ridiculous, isn't it? I just can't help myself. And today at work the new Ann Brashares came in, so of course I snapped that baby up!

Cath - Yeah, yeah, laugh it up - this is all your fault, you instigator! :-) I don't know how I missed putting The Hollow Kingdome series on there - thanks for mentioning it. I've read the first two and need to get to the third. I haven't heard of The Black Magician Trilogy, though - I'll put it on my list. Thanks! (I think.) :-)

  15. I know this question is completely unrelated but I'm wondering where you find the cover images for your post, and then, where you host them.

    Thanks.

  16. Acckk - You're so organized! We share many of the same series' although there are a few on yours I'll be adding to the TBR :)

  17. Elena - I usually get my images from publishers' sites, and if it's a non-book-cover-related photo I search creativecommons.org for images that I can use. I usually save them and then post them, so they'll remain there even if the link changes, and then I delete them from my computer. Hope that helps!

Joanne - I probably wouldn't be so organized if making up a series page weren't so much more fun than studying for comps. Ah, procrastination! I'm such a pro at it. :-)

  18. It's a bit scary when you start writing them down like that isn't it. Last year I did a similar post where I listed all the series I was reading and I was so shocked. I basically said I wasn't going to start many more, but wouldn't you know I have actually added loads more to my list.

Of the ones that you listed I am also reading Kelley Armstrong books, Stephanie Plum, Colleen Gleason, Keys to the Kingdom serie by Garth Nix, Naomi Novik, J D Robb, and Harry Potter. I also know that I really need to read Patricia Briggs and I need to get back to the Pratchett books.

    Whew! What a reading list.

  19. Marg - it does seem rather hopeless when it's down in black & white, doesn't it? And of course I keep starting new ones, too. Who could resist? It's all about the journey, right? I just know you'll love Patricia Briggs - I'm looking forward to hearing what you think when you get to them!

  20. I'm so behind on my reviews too! I hope you enjoy the next book!

  21. Mariel - I started The Riddle yesterday, and it's really good, of course! They've just left the mountain retreat, and evil things are looming in their future... I love this series!

  22. Yep it's all about series reading. I have a lot of the same ones as you and can definitely recommend you add Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series to your list, you will love her I promise. I have a notebook with a list of the series I own or want to start, green ticks if I have the book and red ticks mean I have read it. I love lists and notebooks what can I say!

  23. I'll second the comment about the Black Jewels trilogy. Even though there are some things about that series that annoy me, I keep going back and re-reading them anyway, simply because I like the characters and the magic system.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rhinoa and Elena - I somehow missed the Black Jewels when I put the list together! However, I've only read the first two, and you've both reminded me that I must get to the rest of those books soon!

  26. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld,
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

And I'll be sure not to have any spare time this year ;)

  27. Denise - I need to get to those as well! I think I've given up on spare time. :-)

  28. Holy cow! This must have taken you ages to write up. :) We have very similar taste in series.

This is very impressive. And I love that you've linked to your reviews. I am now going to click through a bunch and read them because I am procrastinating on this snowy Sunday. ;)

  29. Cat - I am all about procrastination. :-) The more studying I have to do, the more blog posts I write, it seems. I was surprised by how many series I'm reading - it was a bit shocking. And I keep adding them! Help!

    ReplyDelete
  30. You've inspired me to do the same thing on my blog. You're right about how surprising it is to tally up the series you're reading. I just added the Temeraire books to my list (bought the next three today).

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh, good - I'll be interested to see what you put on your list! Cath from Read_Warbler inspired me to do it. Happy to pass it on! :-)

I really need to get to the next Temeraire book. He's such a sweetie!

  32. Oh Darla! You and me both have the never ending series problem!! I have so many series I'm reading or wanting to read, I have to have my list with me when I go shopping so I make sure I don't get duplicates :)

If you like the Queen Betsy series by Mary Janice Davidson, you might like the Aisling Grey series by Katie MacAlister...it's about dragons, and it's totally hillarious!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Stephanie - You didn't just recommend another series to me, did you? You are cruel. :-) I'll add it to my tbr - I love to intersperse heavier books with lighter, funny reads, so that sounds like a good one to add! Thanks.
